An air-conditioned minibus picks you up after lunch, stops in Kula for a takeout dinner, and takes you to the crater overlook below the summit for sunset, staying on for the first stars. Pick it for the easy hours and the hotel pickup: no 2 a.m. alarm, no reservation, and the park fee is included.

Polynesian's sunset departure is the easy-hours version of its sunrise trip. Polynesian's own site runs it from about 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. from April to September and 1:30 to 8:30 p.m. from October to March, with hotel pickups from major Maui hotels. On the way up you stop in Kula for the takeout dinner from Kula Bistro, then at park headquarters at about 7,000 feet, and finally the crater overlook at 9,740 feet.
A note on Kula: the listing still sends you to the Kula Lodge Marketplace. The Kula Lodge restaurant burned down in August 2025, but the lodge's shop and deli stayed open. Dinner is to go, eaten up top: guests in 2026 describe good sandwiches and enough time to eat before the light show. After sunset the group stays to watch the stars come out, then rides down.
The same fine print as the sunrise tour applies. There's no refund if the sunset is clouded out, only if Polynesian cancels for safety. No pickups in Lahaina, at Airbnbs or private homes. The road is rough and winding, and guests advise motion-sickness precautions. Polynesian's site warns it can drop to about 20°F at the top, so a warm jacket is not optional.
Call the operator at least two days ahead for your exact time and waiting spot.

★★★★★One minute your so disappointed because its cloudy and raining but then as soon as the sun begins to set the most amazing sun set. [...] Our driver was informative, fun, and we felt safe with his careful driving up and down the volcano.
★★★★★Great tour. Good sandwiches. The driver was knowledgeable and a good driver. If you get car sick, take precautions
★★★★★40 degrees and windy at the top; long drive. Worth the time for the great view and the stories along the way.
★★★★★It was cloudy when we got up but the clouds broke just as we were leaving so we got a nice sunset shot.

No. The park has no sunset reservation system, and the tour includes park admission. Our sunrise or sunset guide compares the two.
The tour runs rain or shine and there's no weather refund. Clouds often break around sunset, and guests have seen it clear just as they were about to leave. Use the free cancellation up to 24 hours before if the forecast is hopeless.
