Bike Maui and Haleakala EcoTours · Haiku

Sunrise by van, then ride down

Bike Maui drives you from its shop in Haiku to the summit for sunrise, then takes you down to 6,500 feet, outside the park, where you ride downhill on your own on a Kona mountain bike. Pick it if the sunrise alone feels like a long night for a short show: guests keep saying the ride down was the best part.

Haleakala Sunrise & Self-Guided Bike Ride

About this experience

Bike Maui is the bike side of Haleakala EcoTours, and this is its best-selling ride. You check in at the shop in the Haiku Marketplace, 810 Haiku Road, between 3:00 a.m. (May to September) and 4:00 a.m. (December to February), per Bike Maui's own schedule. The van takes you to the summit for sunrise, with park entry included, so you need neither the $1 reservation nor the $30 car fee.

The bikes stay off the summit. Commercial downhill rides inside the park have been suspended since October 2007, so the van brings you back down to about 6,500 feet, just outside the entrance, for the famous switchbacks. Since February 2023 a Maui County ordinance has also banned commercial riding through residential Kula, and the van shuttles you past it. Guests describe a first leg of about 7 miles, a reload, and a second leg through Olinda and Makawao back to Haiku, with a no-host breakfast stop on the way.

Self-guided means you ride at your own speed with a map; the guide drives the van, and you can call if you need a pickup. The gear is good: Kona bikes with hydraulic disc brakes, Bell helmets, a Helly Hansen windbreaker suit, gloves and a backpack. The rules are strict: 15 and up, at least 4 feet 10 inches, 300 pounds at most, recent riding experience, not pregnant. The roads are open to traffic, and rain is common lower down.

  • Sunrise at the summit with park entry included
  • A self-guided ride from 6,500 feet on the switchbacks
  • Kona bike with hydraulic disc brakes and a Bell helmet
  • Helly Hansen windbreaker suit, gloves and backpack
  • A breakfast stop in Upcountry on the ride

What guests say

★★★★★

The only issue we did not expect, was that the ride is now broken into 2 segments. The first 7 miles around the volcano and then a required reload and restart for another segments about 8-10 miles later due to part of the road no longer being available for bikes.

The top of the summit is very cold, definitely wear layers, you'll be able to leave your extra layers in the van for the switchbacks. [...] The road is tight but it is totally doable for almost all levels of rider.

We had to be in the office by 3am, which was the toughest part but we'll worth it. [...] After, shuttle brought us down about 6700 ft and from there prepped us with the mountain bikes and our safety.

We had a great time despite socked in with clouds for the sunrise. The guide gave great directions, entertaining and the equipment was in great condition.

Tips before you book

  • Check your check-in time for the month and add the drive to Haiku. From Kaanapali that's about an hour.
  • Wear shorts under your pants, a guest advises: changing layers on the roadside is easier.
  • The wind suit runs large and gloves help. Bring warm socks or your own gloves for the summit wait.
  • Bring a card or cash for breakfast and water for the ride.
  • Booking direct, Bike Maui lists this ride from $220 plus taxes and fees.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Haleakala bike ride start?

At about 6,500 feet, just outside the national park entrance. The park has suspended commercial downhill rides inside its boundary since 2007, so the van takes you from the summit back down to the start. Riders 15 and up only.

Is the bike ride guided?

No, it's self-guided with a map. You ride at your own speed while the van and guide stay on call. A guided version exists for those who want a leader in front.

Do I need a sunrise reservation for the bike tour?

No. The van enters on the operator's permit and the listing includes park entry. See our reservation guide for the rules if you drive yourself.

Why is the ride split into two parts?

Since 2023, Maui County law bans commercial bike tours through residential Kula, so the van shuttles you past that stretch before you ride on through Olinda and Makawao.
