The summit by day, then Iao Valley

Polynesian Adventure Tours picks you up at 6 a.m. for a full day in Central Maui: the Haleakala summit in daylight, a distillery tour in Upcountry, a drive through Wailuku and the Iao Needle. Pick it if you have no car and want the crater in full color plus the island's other big sight, without a 2 a.m. alarm.

Best of Maui: Haleakala, Upcountry & Iao Valley

About this experience

This is Polynesian's daytime loop of Central Maui. Pickup is around 6:00 a.m., and the first half of the day goes to Haleakala: about an hour and a quarter in the park and an hour at the Visitor Center, with the crater's cinder cones lit up instead of hidden in the dark. Daytime means no sunrise reservation question at all, and the listing includes park admission.

Coming down, the bus stops for 90 minutes at Hali'imaile Distilling Company in Upcountry. The distillery's tour is open to all ages, but tasting is for 21 and over; under-21s wait outside for that part. Then the route passes historic Wailuku and Ka'ahumanu Church on the way to 30 minutes at Iao Valley and the Iao Needle, where Kamehameha fought for Maui. Iao Valley State Monument closed for bridge repairs from late April 2026 and the state parks page shows it open again, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

One contradiction to settle before you pay. The listing's title says "with Lunch" and its inclusions list lunch, but the itinerary text says lunch in Makawao is "(own expense)". Ask Polynesian which applies on your date and carry some cash either way. The same rules as Polynesian's other tours apply: no Lahaina or Airbnb pickups, rain or shine, refunds only for safety cancellations. Guests call the day "a bit long" and the Iao stop rushed.

  • Haleakala summit and crater in daylight, park admission included
  • Hali'imaile Distilling Company tour (tasting 21+)
  • Makawao, Wailuku and Ka'ahumanu Church on the way
  • The Iao Needle viewpoint in Iao Valley
  • Hotel pickup and a narrating driver-guide

What guests say

★★★★★

The tour is a bit long but the volcano and crater were great and the views were magnificent. Wendell was one of the best tour guides I’ve ever had.

I hiked from where the tour bus stopped to the summit and it gave a better view of the crater. Iao Valley was also great. This tour takes up most of the day and you really only see two attractions being Haleakala and Iao Valley but because both are so beautiful it is worth booking this tour.

Cousin Mitch was our tour guide! He was so friendly and knowledgeable about Haleakala and Iao Valley! He gave us enough time at each stop.

Tips before you book

  • Ask the operator about lunch before the day. The listing contradicts itself.
  • Bring a light jacket: it's cool at the summit even at midday.
  • Use the summit time well: a guest walked up from the bus stop to the top for a better crater view.
  • Bring ID if you're 21 or over and want the tasting.
  • Bring cash for the tip and any lunch.
