Haleakala winter sunrise 2026-27

From November to March the sun comes up late, which buys you a little sleep, and the summit is at its coldest. Here are the times, the pickups and the dates to book for the holidays.

Winter is the late season for Haleakala sunrise. The sun rises close to 7 a.m. at New Year, about an hour and 20 minutes later than in June, so pickups move later too. The trade-off is cold: before dawn the summit is often below freezing, and now and then it gets snow and ice.

Hawaii does not change its clocks, so the times below hold all winter. They are computed for the summit's position in Hawaii time, for a sea-level horizon.

The quick answer

Sunrise at Haleakala runs from about 6:26 a.m. on 1 November to 7:03 a.m. in mid January, then back to 6:34 a.m. by mid March. Polynesian Adventure Tours picks up from 2:30 a.m. from October to March. Expect temperatures near or below freezing at the top. Sunrise reservations open 60 days ahead at 7 a.m. HST, so Christmas Day dates opened on 26 October and New Year's Day dates open on 2 November 2026.

What time is sunrise at Haleakala in winter 2026-27?

Between about 6:26 and 7:03 a.m. The latest sunrises come in early to mid January.

The sky starts to glow well before the sun appears. Civil twilight, when the horizon turns orange, begins about 23 minutes before sunrise, and that is the part most people come for. Be at your viewpoint 30 to 60 minutes ahead; the four sunrise parking lots close when full, says the park's reservation FAQ.

We calculated these times with the NOAA solar formula for the summit area. At 10,000 feet the sun can clear the clouds a minute or two earlier; treat the table as your planning clock, not a stopwatch.

What time is pickup for a winter sunrise tour?

Around 2 to 3 a.m., depending on your hotel. Polynesian Adventure Tours switches to its 2:30 a.m. winter departure from 1 October to 31 March.

The listing for the sunrise tour with breakfast offers two departures: "2am: Summer (4/1-9/30)" and "2:30am: Winter (10/1-3/31)". That is the start of the pickup run, not your time. You call the operator at least two days ahead to get the exact minute and the spot at your hotel. Lahaina is not on the route.

Valley Isle Excursions keeps a 2:00 a.m. start for the Majestic sunrise tour and picks up across South and West Maui. On the classic sunrise tour, one September 2026 guest reports a pickup around 1:45 a.m. and arrival at the top around 4:45. Driving yourself from Kihei or Wailea takes about 1.5 to 2.25 hours, so in late December you leave around 3:30 to 4 a.m., a little later than in summer.

How cold is the Haleakala summit in winter?

Below freezing before dawn on many mornings. The summit runs about 30°F colder than the coast, and wind makes it feel colder still.

The park's weather page puts year-round summit temperatures between below freezing and highs of 50 to 65°F, with wind chill and damp cloud on top. Sunrise is the coldest hour of the day, and you stand still for 45 minutes of it.

Guests notice even in autumn. One Majestic tour guest in October 2026 wrote: "You should dress warm because the temperature at the top is around 30 degrees. They provided warm lined ponchos as an added bonus to keep you warm." Valley Isle hands out those ponchos; most operators do not. Bring a warm jacket, a hat, gloves and long trousers, and read what to wear for Haleakala sunrise for the full list.

Can snow or ice close Haleakala in winter?

Yes, usually for hours rather than days. Ice closed the summit in February 2021 and again in January 2025, and the park cancelled that morning's sunrise reservations.

Winter storms can coat the upper road in ice. On 3 February 2021 the park closed the Summit District at 4 p.m. with ice building up in the parking lots and cancelled every sunrise reservation for 4 February (NPS). On 10 January 2025, thunderstorms brought winds of 70 mph and ice down to 6,000 feet; the summit reopened around 1 p.m. once most of it had melted (Maui Now).

A short closure is still a lost sunrise if it falls on your morning. The same rules apply as in a storm: tours are cancelled and refunded, and the $1 reservation is gone. Our post on the 2026 closures covers refunds and where to check status.

When should I book Haleakala sunrise for Christmas and New Year?

Now. Reservations open 60 days ahead at 7 a.m. HST, so most holiday dates open between late October and early November 2026. Tours fill early too.

The park releases sunrise reservations on Recreation.gov 60 days ahead at 7 a.m. Hawaii time, plus a second batch two days ahead. The park's FAQ says the daily release "often sells out within fifteen minutes", and holiday weeks are the hardest. Log in a few minutes before 7 a.m. Hawaii time, which is noon on the US East Coast in winter.

On a tour you skip all of that: the operator enters on its permit. Book as soon as your flights are fixed. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before means an early booking costs nothing if plans move. The full system is explained in our reservation guide.

Is winter a good time for Haleakala sunset, stars and whales?

Yes. Sunset comes before 6 p.m. in November and December, the nights are long, and humpback whales are around Maui from November to May.

Winter sunset is early, between about 5:44 and 6:03 p.m. from mid November to mid January. You are back down for a late dinner, and the stars are out by the time you leave. The sunset and stargazing tour meets in Makawao at 4 p.m., brings a telescope and warm outerwear, and takes eight guests at most.

Humpbacks are generally seen in Hawaii from November into May, with the peak from January through March. Do not count on spotting them from 10,000 feet. A sunrise tour has you back at your hotel around midday, which leaves the afternoon for the coast.
