The sunrise reservation

A $1 ticket stands between you and the most famous sunrise in Hawaii. It sells out in minutes, and a tour lets you skip it altogether.

Since 2017 Haleakala National Park has capped sunrise. Every private car that wants to pass the entrance station between 3 and 7 a.m. needs a $1 reservation from Recreation.gov, booked ahead, in the name of someone in the car. About 150 vehicles a morning get one.

The rules are short, and nearly every failed sunrise trip breaks one of them: wrong release time, no printout, no ID, or a 3-day rule nobody read. Here is the whole system, checked against the park's reservation FAQ in October 2026, plus the one way around it.

The quick answer

Drive yourself between 3 and 7 a.m. and you need a $1 reservation per car on Recreation.gov. Most go 60 days ahead at 7 a.m. Hawaii time; a second batch opens 2 days ahead, also at 7 a.m. The $30 park fee is extra and card only. On a licensed sunrise tour you need no reservation at all: the operator brings you in on its own permit.

Do you need a reservation for Haleakala sunrise?

Yes, if you drive yourself and arrive between 3 and 7 a.m. No, if you come on a licensed tour, at sunset, or after 7 a.m.

The reservation covers a car, not a person, and only the sunrise window. The rules in one place:

How do you book the Haleakala sunrise reservation?

On Recreation.gov: search for the Haleakala sunrise reservation, make an account first, pick the date, pay $1 and print the confirmation.

  • Create the account days ahead, with your card saved. Checkout is where people lose the race.
  • Book in the driver's name, or in the name of whoever will be in the car with photo ID. The ticket isn't transferable in practice: the name must match the ID at the gate.
  • Print it. The park asks for a paper copy, and the printout goes on your dashboard at the summit lots. There is little phone signal on the mountain anyway.
  • Pay the $30 park fee at the gate by card, or buy the pass online beforehand. An annual pass covers the fee but not the reservation.

One reservation covers one car and everyone in it. A family of five pays $1, not $5.

When are Haleakala sunrise reservations released?

At 7:00 a.m. Hawaii Standard Time, 60 days before the date, then a smaller batch 2 days before. Hawaii has no daylight saving time, so the hour in your time zone shifts.

Most people miss the drop because they set the alarm in their own time zone. 7 a.m. HST is 17:00 UTC all year. Here is what that means at home:

Count the 60 days on the park's calendar, not in your head: the window opens for one date each morning.

No 7 a.m. alarm, no $1 race: Polynesian Adventure Tours picks you up and enters on its own permit.

How do you get a Haleakala sunrise reservation when they sell out?

Log in before 7 a.m. HST, have two backup dates, and use the 2-day release. Weekend and holiday dates go in minutes.

  • Be early, then refresh. Sign in five minutes before the drop and reload as the clock turns. Travel guides that track the system, such as Hawaii Guide, report peak dates going in minutes.
  • Pick a weekday. Weekends and holiday weeks go first.
  • Use the 2-day release as a weather play. Two days out you can read the summit forecast and webcam before you spend your one booking for three days.
  • Each traveller can book. The limit is one per visitor per three days, so two adults in the party can each try for a different morning.
  • Watch for returns, but don't build a trip around one.

Plan the sunrise for early in your stay. If clouds win, the reservation is gone and you can try again three days later.

What happens if you don't have a sunrise reservation?

Rangers turn you back at the entrance station until 7 a.m. By the time you reach the summit, about 30 minutes later, sunrise is over in every month of the year.

Sunrise at Haleakala falls between about 5:45 a.m. in June and about 7 a.m. in January. There is no standby line, and you can't buy the reservation at the gate.

Without a reservation you still have three good options. Go for sunset: the park has no reservation system for it. Go after 7 a.m. with just the park fee. Or book a sunrise tour. Sunrise, sunset or daytime weighs the first two.

Do you need a reservation on a Haleakala sunrise tour?

No. Licensed tour companies enter on their own commercial permit. Your tour ticket is your way in, and you never touch Recreation.gov.

When the park launched the system in 2017, it said there was no change to its commercial use policy for sunrise tours. Four companies hold the park's road-based concessions: Haleakala EcoTours, Valley Isle Excursions, Skyline Eco-Adventures and Polynesian Adventure Tours. Bike Maui's listing sums up the do-it-yourself side well: a pre-dawn drive plus a park reservation, "logistics that are hard to manage solo".

The Polynesian Adventure Tours sunrise trip lists park admission as included; so does the EcoTours classic sunrise tour. Valley Isle's Majestic sunrise tour doesn't itemise the fee on its listing, but you ride in on the operator's van either way. The cost is the price: tours start at $254 per person, against $31 per car for drivers.

What does the sunrise reservation not cover?

Not the $30 park fee, not a parking space at a chosen lookout, and not the weather. It only lets one car through the gate between 3 and 7 a.m.

  • The fee: $30 per private vehicle, valid three days, on the park's fees page. The park takes no cash.
  • Fee-free days: 11 November is the park's last 2026 fee-free day (for US residents), and even then the $1 reservation stays mandatory for 3 to 7 a.m.
  • Parking: the four sunrise lookouts share the 150 cars, and the park closes each lot when it is full.
  • Weather: no refund or exchange for clouds. One guest on a tour summed it up: "We were one of the rare tours where the visibility was low and we could not see anything."
  • A second car: each vehicle needs its own booking.

More on the fee itself in our 2026 park fees post.

Where should you watch, and when should you arrive?

Reach the entrance station about 90 minutes before sunrise and drive on to the Visitor Center or the summit. Leleiwi and Kalahaku are quieter.

The reservation opens four lookouts: the Pu'u 'Ula'ula summit at 10,023 ft, the Haleakala Visitor Center at 9,740 ft, Kalahaku Overlook at 9,324 ft and Leleiwi Overlook at 8,840 ft. The park's own sunrise page points people to Leleiwi and Kalahaku for a less crowded sunrise. From the gate to the summit is about 30 minutes. From Kihei or Wailea, the whole drive takes roughly 1.5 to 2.25 hours, so most drivers leave around 3 a.m.

The sky starts to glow 20 to 30 minutes before the sun appears. That half hour is the best part, so be in place for it. Then decide how you get down: tour or drive yourself covers the road, and what to wear the cold.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Haleakala sunrise reservation per person or per car?

Per car. One $1 reservation covers one private vehicle and everyone in it. The $30 park entrance fee is also per car, paid separately by card.

Can I get a refund if it's cloudy?

No. The park does not refund or exchange sunrise reservations for weather. Book the 2-day release if you want to see the forecast first.

Can I walk or bike into the park for sunrise without a reservation?

The park allows it but does not recommend it: the road is dark, narrow and busy before dawn. On foot or by bike you pay $15 per person (16 and over).

Do sunrise tour guests need their own reservation?

No. Licensed operators bring you in on their commercial permit. You only need the $1 reservation if you drive a private car in between 3 and 7 a.m.
